Those of us teaching children, serving their needs or parenting have long recognized the need to explicitly teach social skills. In our current digital age the need to teach these skills is even more important. Mistakes that might once have been remedied with an apology, potentially has far reaching and more permanent consequences. Often children and youth engage in an on-line world parents may know little about. It is our responsibility as adults to ensure that we are aware of the activities of children and youth in our care. There are many dangers and as a platform keeping social media sites and other web 2.0 tools positive in their application is of benefit to us all. Fortunately there are many resources from lesson plans for educators to locks and controls for parents and on-line monitoring tools available. Educating children and youth about Digital Citizenship, Netiquette and the dangers of on-line activity is a vital part of raising the next generation.
